The Wi-Fi is for everyone. The fancy oat milk might not be. Sharing a home gets easier when you decide together what belongs on the shared tab.
FREE CALCULATORPlan your shared household budgetStart with what you actually share
Make a short list together: rent, utilities, internet, cleaning supplies and any food you all use. Personal shopping can stay personal. There is no perfect list; there is the one everyone understands.
Agree on the approach before a bill arrives. It is much easier to talk about the general rule over a cup of tea than to negotiate each purchase afterwards.
- List the regular bills and when they are due.
- Choose what counts as shared shopping.
- Decide who usually pays each bill.
Fair does not always mean equal
An equal split is a good starting point for costs everyone uses equally. A bigger bedroom, a partner staying regularly or different income levels may call for a different agreement. Make the decision together and write it down.
For example, three people splitting £180 of shared utilities equally would contribute £60 each. If you agree a different share of rent, keep that separate from the equal utility split so nobody has to remember which rule applied.
Keep the small things visible
Put shared purchases in one place as they happen. Include what was bought, the amount, who paid and who is sharing it. Receipts are useful when there is a mix of personal and shared items.
In Splitr, make one group for the home and add each shared expense. Use equal shares or custom amounts to reflect your agreement. Seeing a running balance is easier than piecing together messages at the end of the month.
Give settling up a regular place
Choose a day each month to review balances and pay each other. Record payments after they happen so the group sees the same up-to-date picture.
Revisit the arrangement when someone moves out, a bill changes or your routines shift. A useful system should fit your home, not become another chore.
Let Splitr handle the maths.
