Bring back memories. Leave the IOUs.

From the first booking to the final taxi, keep a group trip easy on everyone’s wallet.

Someone books the apartment. Someone else gets dinner. By Sunday, everyone has paid for something and nobody remembers quite what. A little planning keeps the holiday feeling like a holiday.

Agree on a comfortable budget first

Before booking, give everyone space to say what they are comfortable spending. Talk about accommodation, transport and the plans that cost extra. An activity can be optional without making the person who skips it feel left out.

Separate the costs everyone shares from the things only a few people want to do. If two friends go diving while the others visit a market, the diving bill belongs to those two.

Make one home for the trip’s expenses

Create a group before the first booking. Log deposits, tickets and accommodation as they are paid, including exactly who is included.

Choose a group currency so balances have a consistent reference. If you convert a foreign purchase yourself, agree whether you are using the actual card charge or a shared conversion rate. Avoid mixing estimates with final charges without labelling them.

Share the journey as well as the destination

For a road trip, agree whether you are sharing fuel, parking, tolls and any other costs before setting off. A travel calculator can help estimate the pot, but actual receipts give you the final figures.

Check what the distance includes: a one-way journey and a return journey are very different bills. If several cars are travelling, record the costs for each rather than assuming they all used the same fuel.

  • Include only the people taking that journey.
  • Keep parking and toll receipts together.
  • Replace estimates with actual costs after the trip.

Finish with one friendly check-in

Before everyone goes home, check that the last meals and taxis have been added. Give people a chance to correct anything missing.

Splitr shows the running balances. Pay each other using your usual payment method and record the settlements in the group. Then get back to sharing the photos.
