THE PRACTICAL GUIDEExamples, agreements and mistakes to avoid
THE FORMULAHome total = foreign amount × home currency per foreign unit × (1 + fee % ÷ 100) + fixed home-currency fee

How to use this calculator

Change the example numbers to your own. The results update as you type; copy the result to discuss with your group.

  • Enter the foreign amount and select the foreign and home currency labels.
  • Enter your own rate as home-currency units for one foreign-currency unit.
  • Add fees only if they are not already included in your rate or final card charge.

A worked example

A €120 bill at £0.86 per euro, plus a 2% fee, costs £105.26 after rounding. Three travellers pay £35.09, £35.09 and £35.08.

Assumptions to agree before you split

  • No live exchange rates are fetched. The starting rate is an illustrative example.
  • If the final card charge is known, prefer that actual home-currency amount over this estimate.
  • The currency selector relabels values and does not update the exchange rate. This tool supports currencies with two decimal places.

Is this a live currency converter?

No. Supply a rate from your card statement or an agreed source. The tool is for splitting an agreed converted cost.

Which way round do I enter the rate?

Enter home-currency units per one foreign unit. For example, if €1 costs £0.86, enter 0.86 when the home currency is GBP.
