THE FORMULAYour grocery share = your personal items + (receipt total − all personal items) ÷ people

How to use this calculator

Change the example numbers to your own. The results update as you type; copy the result to discuss with your group.

  • Enter the final receipt total after discounts.
  • List all people sharing the grocery basket.
  • Add personal item totals per person. The remaining basket is split equally.

A worked example

A £90 receipt with £10 of Alex’s personal items and £20 of Sam’s personal items leaves £60 shared. For three shoppers, the totals are £30, £40 and £20.

Assumptions to agree before you split

  • Everyone shares the remaining basket equally. Dietary differences may require a different agreed split.
  • Personal item totals must not exceed the receipt. Allocate item discounts before entering those totals.
  • All inputs must use the same currency.

Can I keep my snacks out of the shared bill?

Yes. Add them to your personal total so only you cover them, while the shared basket is divided evenly.

What about a discount on the whole receipt?

Agree how to allocate the discount first, then enter the final receipt total and personal totals after their discounts.
