Share the journey, not the guesswork.

Estimate fuel using UK imperial MPG, add parking and tolls, then divide the complete away-trip cost between the travellers involved.

Estimated fuel27.3 litres
Fuel cost£39.55
Total journey£51.55
Cost per traveller£5.16
THE FORMULA(((return miles ÷ MPG) × 4.54609 × fuel price) × vehicles + extras) ÷ travellers

How the fuel calculation works

UK MPG measures how many miles a vehicle travels per imperial gallon. The calculator divides return miles by MPG, converts imperial gallons to litres and multiplies by the current price per litre. When several similar vehicles make the same journey, the vehicle count multiplies that estimate.

Real consumption changes with traffic, load, driving style and vehicle efficiency, so treat this as a transparent estimate rather than a mileage reimbursement rate.

  • Enter the full return distance
  • Use a realistic MPG for the vehicles
  • Add parking, tolls and hire charges separately
  • Include only travellers sharing this transport pool

Should drivers pay a share?

Either approach can be fair. Some groups include drivers as ordinary travellers; others exempt them as recognition for providing the vehicle and taking on wear. Agree the rule before travel and adjust the traveller count to match.

For multiple vehicles with very different efficiency or routes, calculate each vehicle separately. Record the final reimbursement as an event expense in Splitr and include the passengers who used that travel arrangement.
