How to use this calculator
Change the example numbers to your own. The results update as you type; copy the result to discuss with your group.
- Enter the subtotal before the service charge.
- Enter any existing service charge separately so it is counted once.
- Choose an additional tip percentage and the number of diners.
A worked example
An £80 subtotal, £8 existing service charge and a 0% extra tip comes to £88: £22 each for four diners.
Assumptions to agree before you split
- Extra tip is calculated on the subtotal, excluding the service charge.
- If the restaurant’s printed total already includes service, subtract that service amount before entering the subtotal.
- This tool shares the final bill equally; different orders may need an itemised split.
Does this add a tip on top of a service charge?
Only if you choose an extra tip above zero. The default is zero. Check the receipt and agree any extra tip together.
How are spare pennies split?
The tool distributes remaining pennies to the first diners instead of rounding everyone independently.
